We begin with either a face-to-face or teleconference interview. The conversation covers what you see as your opportunities and challenges and what you want to accomplish. For many clients – the coaching process is an opportunity to develop and clarify the answers to these questions. We will agree on a schedule, fee, confidentiality and a commitment to work hard. Subsequent sessions will occur according to the agreed upon schedule. In between sessions you will likely be asked to complete some specific actions based on the priorities you set and goals you want to achieve. Additional resources may be offered in the form of assessments, articles, etc to inspire the process. The duration of our relationship is entirely dependent on your requirements and definitions of success.
I received my coaching certification from NYU, where David Rock, the founder of the Results Coaching Systems was instrumental in developing and delivering the coursework. The model is based in neuroscience, how humans change, and positive psychology. For a sample of David’s approach take a look at this video. I also adhere to the Core Competencies as established by the International Coaching Federation.
Companies are often willing to pay for coaching when they have identified one of two common challenges 1- developing high-potentials as fast as possible and 2-closing performance gaps for those with promise. You probably know which category you fall in to. The important perspective is to discuss this service as an investment in your development. Consider the typical management seminar at a cost of $1000 a day. Many companies are more than willing to send managers off to a week long seminar at a cost of well over $5000. The same money can be more successfully applied to a personalized, one-on-one coaching environment at a much deeper level and over a more substantial amount of time. It’s not a one-shot deal like a seminar or conference– it’s an ongoing development relationship.
Every client demands their own schedule. Busy professionals know how to maximize their time and together we find the best option. Meeting in-person is a great way to start but powerful connections are made over the phone when visual distractions are minimized. Most clients prefer to talk every week for about 45 minutes.
Beyond experience, skills and methodology you will likely include chemistry or fit in to your hiring decision. And good chemistry is often identified pretty quickly. A free no-obligation introductory coaching call is one of the best ways to determine fit. Though we encourage all new clients toplan on at at least three months, there is no requirement, either financial or contractual to continue month to month.
Coaching is a skilled practice and should be treated as such. The most respected organization in the field is the International Coaching Federation or ICF. “Founded in 1995, the ICF’s core purpose is to lead global advancement of the coaching profession As the leading global coaching organization, the ICF is working toward this goal by setting high standards, providing independent certification, and building a worldwide network of credentialed coaches.”
